We would all like to believe that workplace violence, “Can’t happen here”, but what if… As society begins to reopen and people return to work, the fear of violence has never been greater. From mental health and social wellbeing concerns to polarized emotions and political viewpoints, many are returning with more challenges than ever before. Join industry expert Adam Coughran as he shares the strategies to recognize behaviors and provide effective resources to prevent workplace violence, regardless of industry. Then, Dr. Gerard Lawson, a Mental Health Counseling professor from Virginia Tech, will help shed light on what can be done when our best efforts at prevention at not enough, and workplace violence occurs. From the immediate aftermath, through the early recovery process, Dr. Lawson will provide practical strategies and resources for how to help support victims, survivors, and witnesses, as they begin the journey of recovery.

Speaker Bios:
Gerard Lawson, Ph.D., LPC, LSATP, NCC, ACS
Professor of Counselor Education, American Counseling Association Fellow
Virginia Tech University

Dr. Gerard Lawson is a Professor in the School of Education at Virginia Tech and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia. Gerard has been a disaster mental health volunteer with the American Red Cross since 2002, and has supported numerous national, state, and local disasters. He was instrumental in helping to coordinate the counseling response to the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech in 2007, and he is the author of Virginia Tech’s Disaster Behavioral Health Plan. He has helped many institutions prepare for crisis response, and works frequently with counselors who have responded, providing debriefing and supportive services. His focus is on building resilience in the individuals and communities that are affected by disasters.
